Elvis is a 5 year old male English Cocker Spaniel. He is a happy, food orientated English Cocker Spaniel who enjoys a fuss. His love of food has meant he is currently a little overweight but with regular exercise and carefully watching his food this can easily be rectified. He will do anything for a treat (and if given the chance will help you with your dinner). He is eager to learn new things especially if food in involved and he know a number of commands and tricks already. He has been great company whilst we work, either settling at our feet or in his space in the room. He will occasionally come over and nudge for a fuss before settling back down.
In the evening he would love to snuggle on the sofa, but knows that he can only do that when we say it’s okay, and will settle in his bed or by your feet. He is fairly quiet until someone is approaching the front door at which point he let you know, but will quickly quieten down to a quick ‘thank you’, Elvis is less keen on people coming into the house especially when he doesn’t know them, but with treats and training he is improving, although it will take some time to build his confidence and an alternative way to greet guests. He has got on with our dog, although they both tend to just do there own thing, so if there is another dog it would need to be fairly chilled but confident as Elvis can occasionally be quite opinionated. They both have their own toys and beds and respect that they don’t share those which makes them both happy. Elvis uses his crate as his space.
Elvis is a bit of a plodder on his walks but this makes for fairly nice calm strolls through the park or woods. He has so far generally been on his lead for walks as he will give chase to squirrels and cats, but if there are none of those distractions his recall is good (probably the thought of treats). He walks fairly well on his lead and harness, with the occasional pull if there is something he sees that he wants to get to. He is good natured meeting people and dogs (although will compete for tennis balls), he will happily stand by you if you stop for a natter. If he’s had a busy day or week he quite likes a chill day, pottering around the house and playing in the garden. Elvis is happy to be left settled in his crate (he occasionally barks at noises outside but being in the crate seems to stop this), he also sleeps peacefully in his crate through the night until morning where he will greet you happily.
However, Elvis doesn’t like to be told off and is very wary of strangers in the house, both of these will see Elvis growling and barking. In the time Elvis has been with us however he has responded really well to an interrupter to stop this behaviour (either the voice command – thank you, or a small Tupperware box with dog biscuits in being shaken), however because of this behaviour we think that’s he will require an experienced owner who can help him to learn calmer behaviours and ways to tell you when he is not happy. We have also recommended a child free house for this reason (although he is fine in the park and out and about and has been fussed by children due to his teddy bear like coat).
He responds well to consistent training and commands and we have been careful to make sure that we both use the same commands and maintain the same rules, he will then work hard to get it right. We have noted that Elvis can guard, when he arrived he would guard his bed, but only if he was able to get it out of his crate, we have therefore made sure his bedding is left in his crate. He does however not react if you take it out to clean it/fluff it up etc, it is only if the bedding is left out in the room. Elvis is a lovely dog who needs a calm and confident owner to help him settle.
